Aluminium Sulphate, known in the trade simply as alum, is the long-established primary coagulant for clarifying water. It remains the lowest-cost option where raw water quality is stable and the pH sits in its effective band. Specification

Grade selection depends on the iron tolerance of your process. Non-ferric alum is specified where iron staining would be a problem, such as paper and potable water.

Applications

Alum is dosed at the flash-mix stage and its performance is pH dependent, so it is normally paired with lime or soda ash for pH correction.

Handling and Storage

Alum solutions are acidic and corrosive to mild steel. Store in a dry covered area and use corrosion-resistant dosing equipment.

• Do not store alongside alkalis or cyanides
