Mono Ethylene Glycol in Bulk

Mono ethylene glycol is one of the highest-volume organic chemicals made, and almost all of it goes into polyester: PET bottles, polyester fibre and film. The remainder does the job most people associate with it, depressing the freezing point of water in engine coolants and chilled water systems. Purity, water content, diethylene glycol and UV transmittance are stated on the batch Certificate of Analysis. Fibre grade carries the tightest limits.

Applications

Fibre grade is specified for polyester because colour and DEG content directly affect the finished polymer.

MEG is not flammable at ambient temperature but it is acutely toxic if swallowed, and its sweet taste makes accidental and deliberate ingestion a real risk.

• Hygroscopic; exposure to air raises water content and spoils fibre grade
