Almost all camphor used today is synthetic, made from turpentine rather than extracted from the camphor tree, and it is chemically equivalent for every practical purpose. India is one of the largest consumers, mostly for religious use, with the balance going into topical pharmaceutical preparations and as a plasticiser for cellulose nitrate. Handling and Storage

Camphor is flammable, sublimes at ambient temperature, and is toxic if swallowed in quantity, particularly by children.
