Zinc oxide is the activator that makes sulphur vulcanisation work, which is why every tyre plant consumes it by the tonne. Beyond rubber it is a white pigment, a ceramic glaze component and the active UV blocker in mineral sunscreen. Handling and Storage

Zinc oxide is a fine light powder that carries easily in air, and inhaling freshly generated fume causes metal fume fever.
