Zinc Chloride in Bulk

Zinc chloride is the active ingredient in galvanising flux, where it strips the last of the oxide off steel so molten zinc can wet the surface. It is also remarkably hygroscopic, which makes it useful as a dehydrating agent and a wood preservative. Assay and basic salt content are stated on the batch Certificate of Analysis. Anhydrous material must be kept sealed or it will deliquesce.

Applications

In galvanising it is normally used with ammonium chloride as a double salt flux, in a ratio set by the bath in question.

Handling and Storage

Zinc chloride is strongly deliquescent, highly corrosive to skin, and its dust attacks the respiratory tract.

• Store in sealed containers in a dry area; it absorbs moisture rapidly from air
• Use goggles, gloves and respiratory protection when handling anhydrous material
• Solutions are acidic and corrode metals; use plastic or lined equipment
• Keep away from alkalis and strong oxidisers
• SDS issued on request
